Yarmouth, Maine - An American Historical Locale

Yarmouth has historical traces of human habitation since the first century AD, and has been settled by Western people since before 1640. A long history of colonial living has permeated Yarmouth's history for the past four hundred years, including some periods of unrest that left the area deserted in the late 1600's and early 1700's.

The area was populated by descendants of the Plymouth Pilgrims, in the 1700's, who fought with local Indian populations throughout the mid 1700's, but by the end of the century, relative peace was forged. Maritime and logging activities served the base economy for the next two hundred years, until the construction of U.S. Route 1, which led to considerable growth, followed by the construction of Interstate 295. The area was thereafter known as one of Portland's best suburban areas to live.
