The Cumberland County town of Windham is located northwest of Portland. It is bordered on the south by Westbrook and the east by Falmouth and the town of Cumberland.  Windham is part of the area's Lakes Region: it borders scenic Sebago Lake to the west, as well as several smaller lakes and ponds.

Local Links in Windham Maine Local Businesses

About 10 miles north of Portland, and still convenient to the Portland area businesses, Windham is the gateway community to the Sebago Lakes Region. It has an abundance of both local and big-box businesses, great recreational opportunities and entertainment, and that's just the beginning. The North Windham village area was recently named Maine's "best place to raise kids" for its low crime, above average Windham schools, and other factors.

Windham, Maine - Past and Present

With the Presumpscot River flowing between Sebago Lake and Portland, the Cumberland and Oxford Canal was vital to Windham's infrastructure during the 1800s. At that time Windham was known for both excellent farm goods and an abundance of water power which enabled the town to develop as a manufacturing center. Windham had several saw mills, a corn and flour mill, textile industry, and a gunpowder factory among its productive businesses. Later, the Portland and Ogdensburg Railway through South Windham took over as the main means of shipping goods from Windham, and by 1919 the Roosevelt Trail Highway – now known as US 302 – took over this function. Today, route 302 is still used by commuters and vacationers as the main access to the region, and Windham is still a center of commerce.
