Overview of Cumberland County
Cumberland County is made up of three cities and twenty-five towns. The county was incorporated in 1760 and is named after William, Duke of Cumberland, the son of King George II. The three cities in Cumberland County include Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook.
Portland is the County seat and is the largest city in the state. It is known as Maine’s business, financial, and retail capitol. Portland consists of a population of 64,000 people.
South Portland embraces a well developed commercial and industrial aspect as well as many beaches, parks and marinas. South Portland hosts a population of 23,803 people.
Westbrook is located on the Presumpscot River and consists of 16.87 square miles. Westbrook is home to a population of 16,534 people.
The twenty-five towns in Cumberland County are Baldwin, Bridgton, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Casco, Chebeague Island, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Frye Island, Gorham, Gray, Harpswell, Harrison, Long Island, Naples, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Pownal, Raymond, Scarborough, Sebago, Standish, Windham, and Yarmouth.
The county consists of 853 square miles and the population was an estimated 276,047 in 2008. Cumberland County is Maine’s largest county based on population. The median resident age is 37.6 years old. The average household size in Cumberland County is 2.4 and the estimated median income per household is 53,875 dollars.
