Historical Tradition: Colonial Beginnings Pave the Way:
Brunswick, Maine was first settled in 1628 near the Androscoggin River, and like several other towns in the area including Bath, Phippsburg, Georgetown, Woolwich, and Arrowsic, the foundation of the English Popham colony from the early 17th century provided the catalyst for towns like Brunswick to be developed. Brunswick declared itself independent of the surrounding colonial areas in 1738, and its namesake was to honor the House of Brunswick and Lüneburg, Hanover Line, the royal family that ruled Great Britain after the Stuart House beginning in 1714. Brunswick continued to develop and flourish as a city, where individuals from several countries in western Europe emigrated to start their lives anew in the New World.

A Vibrant Intellectual Community: Collegiate Presence and Abolitionism:
Brunswick harbors within its borders a rich legacy of higher education, beginning with the charter of Bowdoin College (5000 College Station, Bowdoin College, (207) 725-3100, www.bowdoin.edu ) in 1794 by Governor Samuel Adams of Massachusetts. At the time of its creation, Bowdoin was the most eastern college in the United States. Bowdoin College was named after previous Governor of Massachusetts James Bowdoin, and his son James Bowdoin III was a major benefactor of the institution. After Maine became an independent state from Massachusetts as a result of the Missouri Compromise in the 1820s, the learning institution provided the base for several prominent writers, intellectuals, and politicians to develop their skills and broaden their perspectives. Both authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow graduated from Bowdoin Phi Beta Kappa, and President Franklin Pierce also graduated from the school in the mid 1820s. The rise of Abolitionist thought and the catalyst for Civil War writing can be exemplified through the abolitionist work, Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Known as the "little lady who started the big war", as exclaimed by President Lincoln, Stowe's husband taught at Bowdoin, and she spent her time writing much of the novel there. Other Civil War connections to Brunswick and Bowdoin College include General Otis Howard, who graduated from Bowdoin in 1850, Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew, who was responsible for the formation of the 5th Massachusetts during the war, and Jefferson Davis, the leader of the Confederacy, who held an honorary degree from Bowdoin as well. Other major intellectuals who have graduated from the fine institution include the controversial scientist Alfred Kinsey, and Robert E. Peary, who completed the first successful exploration of the Arctic Circle.

The Brunswick Naval Air Station: Serving the Community and the Nation:
The Brunswick Naval Air Station (1251 Orion Street, (207) 921-2214, www.nasb.navy.mil ) has been a major aspect of Brunswick heritage and national pride. Located two miles northeast of the urban section of Brunswick, NAS Brunswick was commissioned on April 15th, 1943 for the Royal Canadian Airforce to harbor planes in America for the British Naval Command. After the end of WWII in 1946, the base was temporarily deactivated until 1951, when the base was put to use to support three patrol squadrons and one fleet aircraft service squadron. During this time, the base was developed to retain two 8,000 foot runways and two outlying fields, making it one of two major military bases in New England. The base is also the closest military force to the European theater and NATO operations. However, the base is currently slated for deactivation in 2011, following a ruling in 2005 that moved the bases air crafts to a new home in Jacksonville, Florida. The base currently still operates five active duty and two reserve squadrons, and over 1,600 Naval reservists come to NAS Brunswick every year to practice their drills flying majestic planes such as the Lockheed P-3 "Orion", C-130 "Hercules" transports. Any individual seeking to see the epitome of American Naval Airforce accomplishment can visit the base and occasionally spot Naval Reservists in training.
