Overview of Wiscasset Maine
The town of Wiscasset Maine is the county seat of Lincoln County. Located on the tidal Sheepscot River just east of Bath and under 50 miles away from Portland. Wiscasset has its roots as a port town and was at one point in consideration to be chosen as Maine’s capital.
It was the busiest port north of Boston by the late 1700’s. As a modern town, Wiscasset has a charming village area surrounded by beautiful countryside of Mid Coastal Maine.
In 1605, Samuel de Champlain is said to have landed here and exchanged gifts with the Indians. Situated on the tidal Sheepscot River, Wiscasset was first settled in 1663. The community was abandoned during the French and Indian Wars, and the King Philip's War in 1675 and then resettled around 1730. In 1760, it was incorporated as Pownalborough after Colonial Governor Thomas Pownall. In 1802, it resumed its original Abenaki name, Wiscasset, which means "coming out from the harbor but you don't see where."Wiscasset is a great community to call home but not for every home buyer thus we woudl encurage you to check out the property values for homes and condos in South Portland.
