Site of the Popham Colony, Phippsburg was — between 1607 and 1608 — the first English settlement attempted in New England. During its brief existence, colonists built Virginia of Sagadahoc, the first ship in Maine's long history of shipbuilding.

Recreation in Phippsburg, ME
Popham Beach State Park is one of the longest and most beautiful sandy beaches in the entire state. Encompassing a number of influential places, its is not only a place of recreation but place of history and learning. Some of the first European inhabitants of the area were part of the Popham Colony who landed on the site in 1607. Unfortunately, within a year, all of the settlers had either died or returned to England through a long cold winter and much conflict with natives. Today, the beach invites tourist and history buffs alike to bathe, play, and relax along the brisk waters of the North Atlantic.
From Popham Beach State Park to the recently donted 1900 acres of conservation land around the Basin Phippsurg, Maine offers a wide variety of activities and things to do.
The downtown area was a center for shipbuilding and marine industries during the 18th and 19th centuries. Also, its location along the Kennebec River and Atlantic made it strategically appealing for military purposes, hence the erection of Fort Popham. As visitors and residents navigate Main Street, they’ll find many historic buildings and monuments. The significance of the of scattered houses, such as the McCobb-Hill-Minott House are well established, as many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The town is abounding with a remarkably intact collection of Greek Revival capes that have retained their character.
