A lively neighbor to Portland's West, Westbrook's small town charm and thriving city center make it a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. Comparitively inexpensive to Portland's other suberbs, Westbrook offers a unique combination to those wishing to get their lives started and/or settled in Southern Maine.
A History of Industry
Due to its proximity to both the Ports of Cape Elizabeth and Portland, and also the poweful Presumpscot River, Westbrook has a long industrial herritage. With the river powering the mills, Westbrook's sawmill industry gave way to the manufacturing of grain bags, machinery and water wheels, carriage and harness, boots, shoes and moccasins, tinware, leather board, bricks, wooden boxes, box shook, meal and flour. A paper mill in Westbrook founded the city's long history of paper manufacturing. Westbrook also sat on the Oxford and Cumberland Canal, and the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad, solidifying its importance as a center for commerce.
Modern Industrial Development
Westbrook is home to two large industrial parks, as well as the central locations of several of Maine's largest companies, including the E.S. Boulos property development and management company.
The city also hosts the Warren Paper Mill, which at one point was the industrial lynchpin of the town. While that is not exactly still the case, the Mill represents Westbrooks industrial heritage, and lies directly between Portland and Westbrook, a reminder of days past.
Arts and History in Westbrook
The Acorn Production House and the Westbrook Historical Society seek to preserve Westbrook's present and past. The former hosts dozens of events each year, including youth acting camps, touring productions, and adult workshops. The latter hosted 10 programs during the 2007-2008 season, highlighting the city's diverse and thriving economy, culture, and community.
